Safety First — Bestland Garage Door Service on WFRV Local 5
Your garage door will not fold the laundry, but it is very likely the largest moving object in your home and the door your family uses most. In July 2026, Jeffrey Pinney from Bestland Garage Door Service returned to WFRV Local 5 to talk about keeping that door working safely, reading the signals that call for a repair, and knowing what the options are when a door has reached the end of its life.
Why Garage Door Safety Is Not Optional
A residential garage door assembly can weigh a few hundred pounds, and the springs that counterbalance it store an enormous amount of energy. When the system is properly maintained, none of that is a concern. When it is neglected, the failure modes are serious.
Jeffrey walked through the safety checks every homeowner should know:
- The auto-reverse test. Place a solid object on the ground in the door’s path. The door should reverse on contact. If it does not, stop using the opener and call for service.
- The photo eye test. Wave an object through the sensor beam while the door closes. It should reverse immediately. Misaligned or dirty sensors are one of the most common issues we find.
- The balance test. With the opener disconnected, the door should stay put when raised halfway. If it slides down or flies up, the springs are out of adjustment.
- A visual cable check. Look for fraying or slack. Never touch a cable that appears damaged — see our cable repair service.
Sounds and Symptoms That Signal a Repair
As Jeffrey has covered in previous segments, the door usually warns you before it fails. Grinding, popping, uneven movement, a door that hesitates, or an opener that strains are all worth a service call while they are still small problems.
The good news is that most of these are straightforward fixes. Worn rollers, a failed hinge, a spring that has reached the end of its cycle life, or an opener that needs its limits reset are all routine work for our garage door repair team. If a single panel took damage, a damaged panel repair is often all that is needed.
When a Garage Door Is No Longer Worth Repairing
Sometimes the honest answer is that a repair does not make financial sense. Jeffrey outlined when Bestland recommends replacement instead:
- The door has structural damage across multiple sections rather than one
- Repairs in the past year are approaching the cost of a new door
- Replacement parts are no longer manufactured for that model
- The door is 20 or more years old and every component is at end of life
- Insulation and weather sealing have failed badly enough to affect the home
When replacement is the right call, the team walks homeowners through material, insulation level, window options, and hardware style rather than pushing a single product. Browse the range on our garage door installation page, and check our coupons and specials before you decide.
Openers Deserve the Same Attention
A new door on a failing opener is a half-finished job. Modern openers add battery backup so the door still works in an outage, smartphone control so you can confirm it closed after you have left, and quieter drive systems that make a real difference with an attached garage. See our garage door openers page for current options.
Service Backed by a Team That Answers the Phone
Jeffrey closed the segment on the part that does not show up in a spec sheet: the office answers, the technician arrives in the window, and the explanation you get is the same one the technician would give a neighbor. That approach is what carried the company through more than 20 years in this market, and it is what the Bestland name is meant to stand for.
