Your Garage Door Is Telling You Something — Bestland on WFRV Local 5
Most homeowners run their garage door twice a day without thinking about it, right up until it starts making a sound it did not make last month. In June 2026, Jeffrey Pinney from Bestland Garage Door Service joined WFRV Local 5 to translate those noises for Northeast Wisconsin homeowners.
His core point: a garage door that is working correctly is fairly quiet and fairly boring. New noise is almost always the system telling you a part is wearing out, and catching it at the noise stage is dramatically cheaper than catching it at the failure stage.
The Sounds That Mean Call Someone Now
Some noises are urgent. Jeffrey put these at the top of the list:
- A single loud bang, like a gunshot. This is the classic sound of a torsion spring breaking, and it often happens when nobody is even in the garage. Do not try to lift the door afterward. See our garage door spring repair page.
- Grinding or metal-on-metal scraping. Usually rollers that have failed or a door that is starting to bind in the track. Left alone, this is how a door comes off track entirely. Our off-track door repair service can diagnose it quickly.
- A hard slam at the bottom of travel. If the door drops the last several inches instead of settling, the springs are no longer carrying the weight of the door. That is a safety issue, not a convenience issue.
The Sounds That Mean Schedule Service Soon
These are less urgent, but they are the early warning stage — and they are the cheapest problems to fix:
- Squealing or squeaking. Often dry hinges and rollers. Sometimes lubrication solves it. If the squeal comes back within a week, the parts are worn rather than dry.
- Rattling and vibration. Typically loose hardware. Bolts and brackets work themselves loose over thousands of cycles and are quick to tighten.
- Popping or clicking as the door moves. This can point to a section that is flexing, a hinge that is cracked, or a door that has fallen out of balance.
- A straining or humming opener. The motor is fighting resistance somewhere in the door. Fixing the door usually saves the opener. See our garage door openers page.
- Whistling around the edges. Not a mechanical failure, but a worn seal letting in air, water, and pests — and driving up what it costs to heat an attached garage.
Why Noise Gets Worse in Summer
Jeffrey noted that summer brings its own version of this problem in Northeast Wisconsin. Heat dries out lubricant faster, expands metal components, and makes already-loose hardware rattle more. A door that sounded fine in April can sound rough by July without anything new actually breaking.
Because attached garages carry sound straight into the house, summer is also when homeowners simply notice the noise more. Either way, the fix is the same: have it looked at before the noise becomes a failure.
What Homeowners Can Safely Check Themselves
There is a short list of things that are safe to do without tools or training:
- Clear leaves, dirt, and debris away from the bottom of the tracks
- Wipe the photo eye sensors gently if they look dusty
- Look at the bottom seal for cracking, gaps, or missing sections
- Listen to the door once a week so you notice changes early
What is not on that list: springs, cables, and track adjustment. Those components are under extreme tension and are the leading cause of serious garage door injuries. Leave them to a technician. Our cable repair service and noisy garage door repair are both available when you need them.
The Honest Diagnosis Approach
One thing Jeffrey came back to during the segment is that not every noise means you need to spend money. Sometimes the answer really is a tightened bracket or fresh lubricant, and the team will tell you that. When a part is worn and likely to fail, they will explain why rather than just quoting a number. A yearly garage door tune-up catches most of this before it becomes a service call.
