The Biggest Design Choice on Your Home’s Exterior — Bestland on WFRV Local 5
When homeowners think about curb appeal, they picture landscaping, shutters, and a fresh coat of paint on the front door. They tend to overlook the single largest design element on the front of the house. In March 2025, Jeffrey Pinney from Bestland Garage Door Service joined WFRV Local 5 to make the case that the garage door is the most powerful, and most underused, curb appeal tool a Northeast Wisconsin homeowner has.
On many homes the garage door takes up a third or more of the front elevation. It is the first thing the eye lands on from the street, and it sets the tone for everything around it.
Why the Garage Door Carries So Much Visual Weight
A few reasons the door does more for curb appeal than almost anything else you could change:
- Size. Nothing else on the facade is as large. A dated door drags the whole house down, and a fresh one lifts it just as dramatically.
- Position. It usually faces the street directly and sits right by the driveway where visitors arrive.
- Contrast. Because it is such a big block of color and texture, it either ties the exterior together or fights it.
Matching the Door to Your Home’s Style
The key to getting curb appeal right is choosing a door that suits the architecture rather than working against it. Jeffrey walked through the main directions:
- Carriage house. Decorative hardware, paneling, and often windows across the top. A warm fit for traditional, colonial, and craftsman homes.
- Traditional raised or flush panel. Clean and versatile, this style suits the widest range of homes and is the safe, timeless choice.
- Modern glass and aluminum. Full-view or frosted panels in a sleek frame, ideal for contemporary builds and homes with lots of glass and clean lines.
- Faux wood finishes. The character of natural wood grain without the maintenance, a strong option for rustic and craftsman styling.
The Details That Pull It Together
Beyond the base style, a handful of choices decide whether a new door looks intentional or generic:
- Color. Match the trim for a clean, cohesive look, or contrast deliberately with the entry door to create a focal point.
- Windows. A row of windows adds light and architectural interest and can echo the shape of the home’s other windows.
- Hardware. Handles and hinges, even decorative ones, add character and a custom feel for very little cost.
- Panel design. Long panels read modern, short raised panels read traditional. Small choice, big effect.

Curb Appeal That Pays You Back
The visual upgrade is only part of the return. A new door is consistently ranked among the highest cost-versus-value home improvement projects in the country, so the same door that transforms your curb appeal is also one of the smartest investments you can make in the house. Better insulation and a quieter, more reliable door come along for the ride.

Not Replacing Yet? Small Moves Still Help
If a new door is not in the budget this season, the existing one can still look sharper. Repainting or refinishing a faded steel door, replacing a cracked bottom seal, and adding decorative hardware all freshen the look for a modest cost. And a door that runs quietly and smoothly simply presents better. Our garage door tune-up service keeps it operating the way it should.
