Common Problems, Straightforward Fixes — Bestland on WFRV Local 5

Most garage door problems fall into a handful of familiar categories, and a good number of them have simple explanations. In May 2025, Jeffrey Pinney from Bestland Garage Door Service joined WFRV Local 5 to walk Northeast Wisconsin homeowners through the issues they see most, what causes them, and which ones are worth a quick look before picking up the phone.

The Door Will Not Close All the Way

This is one of the most common calls, and the cause is usually one of a few things:

  • The photo eye sensors are misaligned or dirty, so the door thinks something is in the way
  • Something actually is in the beam, a bin, a broom, a stray toy
  • The close-limit setting on the opener needs adjustment
  • A worn roller is catching in the track near the bottom

Wiping the sensor lenses and confirming both point at each other with steady lights solves a surprising number of these. If it persists, our garage door repair team can adjust the limits and check the track.

The Remote or Keypad Stopped Working

Before assuming the worst, run through the easy checks:

  • Replace the battery in the remote or keypad
  • Confirm the wall button still works, which isolates the problem to the remote
  • Check that the opener is not in vacation or lock mode
  • Reprogram the remote if it has lost its pairing

If the wall button also fails, the issue is more likely in the opener itself. See our garage door openers page.

The Door Is Suddenly Loud

New noise is the door telling you a part is wearing. The type of noise narrows it down:

  • Squealing. Dry hinges and rollers, often solved with proper lubrication.
  • Rattling. Loose hardware that has vibrated its way out over time.
  • Grinding. Worn rollers or a binding track that needs attention.
  • A single loud bang. A broken spring, which is not a fix-it-yourself situation. See our garage door spring repair page.

Our noisy garage door repair service can diagnose any of these quickly.

The Door Is Off Its Track or Crooked

A door that looks crooked, hangs unevenly, or has jumped its track should not be operated. Running the opener can cause much more damage and is a genuine safety hazard. This one always warrants a call. See our off-track door repair service, and if a panel was damaged in the process, our damaged panel repair page.

When Easy Stops Being Easy

Jeffrey was clear about the line. Sensors, batteries, debris, and lubrication are fair game for a homeowner. Springs, cables, and anything under tension are not, no matter how simple a video makes it look. Those components store enormous energy and are the most common source of serious injuries.

The honest version of \u201cfix it easily\u201d is knowing which problems are quick and which need a professional. For the ones that do, Bestland offers 24/7 emergency service across Northeast Wisconsin, and the same no-pressure diagnosis the team has always led with.

Prevention Makes Everything Easier

Most of these issues start small and announce themselves before they fail. A yearly garage door tune-up catches worn rollers, loose hardware, weak springs, and drifting sensors before they leave you stuck in the driveway.
