A Halloween Warning for Northeast Wisconsin Homeowners — Bestland on WFRV Local 5

Late October is the season for creaking hinges and things that go bump in the night. In their Local 5 Live appearance in October 2025, Jeffrey Pinney and the team at Bestland Garage Door Service used the occasion to make a serious point in a lighthearted way: the noises and behaviors homeowners laugh off as spooky are usually a garage door asking for help.

There is also a practical deadline behind the fun. October is the last comfortable stretch of the year in Northeast Wisconsin to get a door looked at before cold weather turns a small problem into a driveway emergency.

The Sounds That Go Bump in Your Garage

Every noise on this list has a mechanical explanation, and every one of them is cheaper to fix now than in January:

  • Groaning and creaking. Dry hinges and rollers. This is the most common noise and often the easiest to solve.
  • A shriek or squeal as the door moves. Metal riding on metal, usually worn rollers or a bearing that has given up.
  • A single loud bang. Not the house settling. This is the sound of a torsion spring letting go, and the door should not be operated afterward. See our garage door spring repair page.
  • Rattling and clattering. Loose bolts and brackets working themselves out after thousands of cycles.
  • Grinding. Either a stripped opener gear or a door binding in its track. Our noisy garage door repair service can tell the difference quickly.

When the Door Seems to Have a Mind of Its Own

The genuinely unnerving complaints are the ones where the door moves on its own or refuses to cooperate. There is always a cause:

  • The door opens or closes by itself. Usually a remote with a stuck button, a frayed wall-button wire shorting out, or a neighbor’s opener sharing your frequency.
  • The door reverses for no reason. Almost always the photo eye sensors. Dust, spider webs, a bumped bracket, or leaves drifting through the beam will all do it.
  • The door stops partway. Travel limits or force settings out of adjustment, or a roller catching in the track. See our off-track door repair service.
  • The remote works but the wall button does not. A wiring or logic board issue rather than anything supernatural. Our garage door openers page covers replacement options.

Trick-or-Treat Safety Around the Garage

Halloween puts more children in more driveways after dark than any other night of the year, and the garage door is the largest moving object on most homes. Jeffrey’s reminders for the last week of October:

  • Run the auto-reverse test. A solid object in the door’s path should make it reverse on contact
  • Wipe the photo eye lenses and confirm the beam stops the door every time
  • Keep remotes and keypad codes away from kids handing out candy
  • Never let anyone walk or run under a door that is still moving
  • Keep decorations off the tracks, springs, and out of the sensor beam
  • Make sure the driveway and door area are well lit for the evening

Our garage door safety inspection service covers every one of these checks in a single visit.

The Real Scare Is a Wisconsin Winter

A door that groans in October tends to fail in January. Cold makes worn springs brittle, thickens the lubricant the opener is fighting against, and freezes a cracked bottom seal to the concrete. Every one of those failures starts as a noise somebody decided to live with.

A pre-winter tune-up covers lubrication, spring tension, cable and roller inspection, hardware tightening, and opener adjustment. It is the single best way to make sure the door still works when the temperature drops. If something is already broken, our garage door repair team is available 24/7.

If the Door Itself Is the Eyesore

Sometimes the scariest thing in the driveway is the door. Peeling paint, dented panels, and mismatched styling drag down the whole front of the house, decorations or not. If yours has reached that point, browse our garage door installation options and check the current coupons and specials before the end of the season.
