Do Not Get Stuck with Your Door Down — Bestland on WFRV Local 5

A garage door that will not open always seems to pick the worst possible moment, the morning you are running late, the night you get home in the cold, the weekend when you assume nobody is available. In this Local 5 Live segment, Jeffrey Pinney from Bestland Garage Door Service had a straightforward message for Northeast Wisconsin homeowners: do not get stuck with your door down, but if you do, help is a phone call away, day or night.

Better still, most stuck doors give you warning first. The trick is knowing what to listen and watch for so you can act before you are locked out of your own garage.

The Warning Signs Your Opener Needs a Tune-Up

Jeffrey spent much of the segment on the opener, because it is the part that usually decides whether the door opens on a cold morning. The signs it is due for service:

  • It strains, hesitates, or runs louder than it used to. The motor is fighting resistance somewhere in the door.
  • The door reverses or stops partway. Often the safety sensors or the travel and force settings needing adjustment.
  • The remote or keypad has become unreliable. Intermittent response is an early warning, not just an annoyance.
  • There is no battery backup. A power outage in winter leaves you stuck unless the opener has a backup battery.
  • It is slow to start or slow to close. A sign the door is out of balance and the opener is compensating.

A straining opener is very often a door problem in disguise. When the springs weaken, the opener is left carrying weight it was never designed to lift, and it wears out early. Servicing the door usually saves the opener. If a replacement is the right call, our garage door openers page covers models with battery backup and smartphone control.

Why Doors Get Stuck

When a door will not move, the cause is usually one of a handful of things:

  • A broken spring. The most common reason a door will not lift. If you heard a loud bang, this is almost certainly it. See our garage door spring repair page.
  • A snapped cable. Cables work with the springs to carry the door’s weight, and a broken one can leave the door jammed or hanging crooked. See our cable repair service.
  • The door off its track. A roller that has jumped the track will bind the door in place. See our off-track door repair service.
  • Opener failure. A stripped gear or failed motor leaves the door stuck even when everything else is fine.
  • A frozen bottom seal. In a Wisconsin winter, the seal can freeze to the concrete overnight and hold the door shut.

If Your Door Is Already Stuck, Do Not Force It

The most important thing Jeffrey stressed is what not to do. If the door will not move, do not keep hitting the opener button and do not try to muscle it open. If a spring or cable has failed, the door is unbalanced and under tension, and forcing it can cause more damage or injury. The safest move is to stop and call a professional. Our garage door repair team can diagnose it quickly and safely.

Help Anytime, Even Nights and Weekends

The part of the segment homeowners remember most is that a stuck door does not have to ruin your day. Bestland offers 24/7 emergency service across Northeast Wisconsin, which means you can reach the team at night, on a weekend, or during the holidays, exactly when a door tends to fail. You are not waiting until Monday to get your car out of the garage.

The Best Fix Is the One You Never Need

A stuck door is almost always the end of a story that started with a noise or a hesitation weeks earlier. A yearly garage door tune-up catches worn springs, fraying cables, loose hardware, and a strained opener before any of them leave you stranded. It is the cheapest insurance against an emergency call on the coldest morning of the year.
