Cold Weather Garage Door Problems — Bestland Explains on WFRV Local 5
As the tail end of Wisconsin winter lingered into mid-March 2026, Bestland Garage Door Service returned to WFRV Local 5 to address one of the most common calls they receive this time of year: garage doors that malfunction due to cold-weather stress.
The Most Common Cold-Weather Garage Door Malfunctions
Jeffrey Pinney from Bestland walked Local 5 viewers through the malfunctions that spike every winter in Northeast Wisconsin:
- Broken torsion springs: Cold metal becomes brittle. Springs that were already worn are most vulnerable to snapping in freezing temperatures.
- Frozen bottom seal: The rubber seal at the bottom of your door can freeze to the ground overnight, tearing when the opener tries to lift the door.
- Opener motor strain: Cold thickens lubricants and increases the weight the motor has to work against, causing premature burnout.
- Contraction causing misalignment: Metal tracks contract in cold weather and can pull out of alignment, causing the door to bind or come off track.

Prevention Is Always Better Than an Emergency Call
A pre-season garage door tune-up before winter hits can prevent the majority of cold-weather failures. If you skipped it this year, now is a great time to schedule one for next fall.
